A gift that marks a particular milestone
A big birthday, retirement, graduation, a first home, a hard year survived.
This gift needs to mark a specific moment, not just be nice. 1. Tell me what this milestone actually means to the person, as opposed to what the greetings-card version of it means. A retirement can be a relief or a loss. A new home can be exciting or exhausting. 2. Suggest gifts that acknowledge the real version: things that mark the transition, things that help with what comes next, and things that honour what is ending. 3. Give me one idea that will still matter in ten years, and say why. 4. Warn me off anything that would read as a comment on their age, their choices or their circumstances. If the milestone is mixed or difficult, do not be relentlessly upbeat about it. Say what tone the gift should carry. Ask me about the person's actual feelings if I have not told you.
