Give without creating an obligation
When a gift might land as pressure, debt, or a request for something back.
I want to give this person something without it creating a debt, an expectation or an awkward moment. 1. Tell me what specifically could make this feel like an obligation: the amount, the timing, the relationship imbalance, or the implication that they should reciprocate. 2. Suggest gifts that are difficult to feel indebted about: consumables, something shared, something small and clearly spontaneous, or help framed as convenience rather than charity. 3. Tell me how to give it. The framing usually matters more than the gift: making it incidental, giving it when they are not expecting to be given something, and saying explicitly that nothing is expected back. 4. Give me one sentence to say, and one thing not to say, since the common reassurances make it worse. If the honest answer is that any gift here would carry weight, say so and tell me what to do instead. The person and the situation:
Making it yours
- Paste your own material where the prompt asks for it. Everything above that line is instruction, not content.
- Delete any rule that does not apply to you. A shorter prompt that fits beats a thorough one that does not.
- If the answer comes back vague, add a line saying what you do not want. Constraints work better than encouragement.
Tricky recipients. Colleagues, near-strangers, people who want nothing, and gifts that could land as pressure.
