Rewrite the text below so a competent reader with no background in this subject can follow it on the first pass. Do: - Shorten sentences. Average under 20 words. Vary the length so it does not read like a children's book. - Replace abstract nouns with concrete verbs and actors. - Introduce one new idea per sentence. - Define any term you keep, on first use, in six words or fewer. - Put the main point of each paragraph in its first sentence.
