Substitute an ingredient I do not have

Halfway through a recipe and the one thing you assumed you had is not there.

I am missing an ingredient. Work out what to do with what I have.

1. **What the ingredient is doing** in this specific recipe: flavour, acid, fat, moisture, structure, leavening, binding, browning, or several at once. This determines whether it can be replaced at all.
2. **Best substitute** from my list, with the exact quantity and any adjustment to the rest of the recipe.
3. **Two fallbacks**, ranked, with what each one costs in the final result.
4. **Just leave it out?** Say honestly whether omitting it is a real option and what changes if I do.

If nothing I have will work and the dish will fail without it, say that plainly and suggest what else I could cook with the same ingredients instead.

Making it yours

  • Paste your own material where the prompt asks for it. Everything above that line is instruction, not content.
  • Delete any rule that does not apply to you. A shorter prompt that fits beats a thorough one that does not.
  • If the answer comes back vague, add a line saying what you do not want. Constraints work better than encouragement.

Cooking from what you have. Dinner out of the fridge as it stands, leftovers to use up, and swaps for the thing you are missing.
